AMEYALLI: Deepak Chopra’s Newest Wellness Vision

He’s one of the world’s most famous people. So famous, all you need to hear is his first name—Deepak—and you know exactly who he is. Deepak Chopra, M.D. has carved out a worldwide presence in the wellness world over the past thirty years, leading the way in bringing awareness and understanding of the universal need for both mental and physical well-being.

Deepak Chopra, whose career began as a physician and professor, has authored over 90 books. His books span meditation, yoga, Ayurvedic medicine, mindfulness, spiritual enlightenment, self-care and other wellness topics. He heads The Chopra Foundation as well as Chopra Global, an all-encompassing website/app designed for “empowering personal transformation for our collective well-being” that is chockablock with educational products, retreat offerings and other resources encouraging self-care.

And now, at 77 years old, Chopra has begun a new collaboration with real-estate developer Charles “Chuck” Heath, intending to bring a new way of living to Utah’s Wasatch Mountains with their Ameyalli Resort. We recently caught up with both men at the groundbreaking ceremony in Midway, Utah, the place locals call “Wasatch Back,” to find out more about this unique “well-being and longevity community.” It’s a combination of residential living, a vacation resort, and a healing geothermal vortex. It’s also home to the Ameyalli Wellbeing Center and Center of Excellence—the North American headquarters of the Chopra Foundation, where Chopra has advanced technological ideas he’s ready to implement.

Developer and design firms: Chuck Heath and Overland Partners, San Antonio, and the Chopra Foundation

The details: When architecture and urban design firm Overland Partners was introduced to developer Chuck Heath, initial meetings quickly evolved into deeper conversations about “creating a new paradigm in wellbeing experiences,” says senior principal Bob Shemwell. Enter Ameyalli, a longevity-focused community in Midway, Utah built around a natural geothermal spring that archaeological history suggests has been used by humans for nearly five millennia. Designed in collaboration with Deepak Chopra, known for his work in medicine and mindfulness, and the Chopra Foundation—which has selected the property as its North American headquarters—Ameyalli’s “design will respond to the [location] in the most authentic and respectful way possible,” he says. The property’s low-profile and nature-forward architecture marries interiors with the surrounding geography through a palette of wood, pot rock from the geothermal landscape, and native grasses—all set against a cinematic backdrop of Mount Timpanogos and the south-central Rocky Mountains.

Slated to launch in 2027—joining the 24 luxury residences and two-family lodges currently open—is an 80-room boutique hotel and the sprawling 50,000-square-foot, indoor-outdoor Ameyalli Wellbeing Center at the heart of the community. Drawing from Chopra’s legacy teachings on wellness, the center offers an array of programming, as well as a subterranean flooded hypostyle hall that contains thermal pools in a range of temperatures and qualities. “The stories and inherent spiritual and emotional qualities of the site are expressed throughout the composition,” Shemwell adds, “but as you descend to the lower depths of the spa [there’s] a stronger, more visceral connection to its hidden aspects.”

Deepak Chopra joins Midway groundbreaking for wellness center based on his principles

Alternative medicine and wellness figure Deepak Chopra visited Midway on Friday afternoon to speak at the groundbreaking of Ameyalli, a resort with a focus on Chopra’s seven pillars of wellness — emotional regulation, sleep, mindfulness, movement, relationships, nutrition and laughter.

Chopra spoke outside the realm of traditional medicine with claims about gene editing, how he thinks wellness practices someday may prevent most diseases like cancer, how his organization used artificial intelligence in the COVID-19 pandemic to find that everyone who got sick had severe anxiety or depression and what his organization hopes to accomplish in healing and preventing chronic diseases.

“Right now, I think the major pandemic in the world is not COVID-19,” he said. “The major pandemic is depression and anxiety and inflammation, and they go together.”

He invited the audience to reflect on their physical, emotional, mental and spiritual well-being.

“Most people die of disease,” he said. “They don’t die a peaceful death in meditation, which is how it should be.”

Midway Mayor Celeste Johnson was excited to talk about the city’s agreement with resort developer Charles Heath and the benefits the facility can have for the community.

Heath has said the completed resort will employ hot springs in the area, including a pair designated for the public to use for free.

Friday afternoon was an emotional moment for him as he spoke to the crowd standing between two of the project’s completed two residencies. He said he’s worked on the project for four and a half years with his wife, and he referred to it as their legacy, a “labor of love.”

WELLNESS RE-THOUGHT & REVITALIZED. Ameyalli Retreat poised to bring a new standard of living to an old resort just outside Park City

The myriad mineral hot springs that dot the landscape around Midway, Utah, have long attracted health-seekers and vacationers from far and wide. Native Americans of the Ute and Shoshone nations consider these hot springs sacred and have cared for them for generations. In the late 1800s, a group of Swiss settlers continued the tradition with new resort construction. Towards the middle of the 20th century, the Mountain Spa Resort took shape, becoming a home-away-from-home for Hollywood elite.

Much like those who visit the area, the resort is now experiencing a rebirth as the Ameyalli Resort and Residences development gets underway.

“This is so much more than a real estate project, it’s about how we can make our society healthier and more joyful,” says lead developer Chuck Heath.

Heath is a long-tenured developer, but Ameyalli signals a new turn, especially with the branded star power of one of the world’s foremost names in wellness: Deepak Chopra and the Chopra Foundation. The resort, whose name is drawn from the Aztec meaning for “a place where the healing water flows,” is the first real estate development designed in collaboration with Deepak Chopra and his Chopra Foundation.

Historic Area Reborn as New AMEYALLI Wellness Resort

Over a century ago, Swiss settlers found their way to the rural town of Midway, situated on land the Native Americans of the Ute and Shoshone nations discovered years before. With rustic Old-World charm and scenery straight from a storybook, Midway is the kind of place where fairytales are made possible. The Ameyalli site was an ancestral landmark attraction frequented by Native Americans. It was deemed sacred thanks in part to natural springs filled with geothermal waters and hot pots known for rich mineral content and healing powers. Because of the numerous hot water springs in Midway that are 90°F or warmer, several resorts popped up during the late 1880s, such as Schneitter’s Hot Pot Resort, predecessor of the present-day Homestead Resort. In the forties and fifties, The Mountain Spa Resort was established and became a gathering place for the community and Hollywood’s elite, focusing on the healing properties of the geothermal pools. This historic area is once again being reborn, this time as the new Ameyalli resort.

TRANSFORMATIVE LIVING
Ameyalli is a wellness community set to offer owners and guests the opportunity to reside, rejuvenate and continue this sacred land’s well-being tradition. With 28 natural hot springs and stunning views of the Timpanogos Mountains, the resort combines forward-thinking architecture, holistic health and wellness modalities, and surrounding world-class recreation, such as five championship golf courses and two reservoirs to provide an unparalleled experience. The resort takes its name from the Aztec word for spring or fountain. The reinvented Midway property aims to return water to life, creating a place where guests can reconnect with nature, relax the mind, recalibrate the body, and recharge the soul. The therapeutic qualities of the 104°F natural hot springs water at Ameyalli are not only a treat for the senses but also for the body and mind. With an abundance of geothermal pods (the largest number in Utah), Ameyalli is poised to be a wellness haven for those looking to detox, recharge, heal and plug into nature.
